THE ESTATE

Hougun Manor is a beautiful 90 acre estate situated on the west shore of Coniston Water, Cumbria and has been classified by Natural England as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

MORE ABOUT THE ESTATE

From the highest point of Hougun Manor you can enjoy outstanding views of the lake and the surrounding hills. The estate overlooks Peel Island which literary buffs might recognise as the setting for Arthur Ransome’s classic ‘Swallows and Amazons’. There are clear footpaths which you can follow and part of the Great Cumbria Way crosses the land. We are very near the Old Man of Coniston – a popular spot for walkers – which rises to 803 metres (2,635 feet).

Lord Michael Edwards - Kids Count Advisory Board Member

I sit on the Advisory Board of a voluntary organisation called Kids Count, founded by Linda Lawrence.  It is an organisation that is fiercely independent of Government influence and committed to finding practical solutions to a broad spectrum of issues that affect children and young people in both urban and rural environments.  It focuses on issues such as drug and alcohol addiction, prolific and persistent offending, education, gun and knife crime, gang crime, discipline, bullying, homelessness, fostering and adoption. Kids Count has been working in this arena, long before knife and gun crime, for instance, became an area of media interest.

We believe Education is the key to freedom and opportunity for our young but that the standards available should be the same for all and not be based on postcode and that every child regardless of background or financial status should have access to the very best. We also recognise that our young are the key to the future well-being and prosperity of our Country. However, we are increasingly reading stories which show that our young people are not receiving, in all cases, the right guidance and support.  Kids Count is not a soft touch, and recognises that with rights comes accountability and that our young must be encouraged to take some responsibility for their actions.

Uniquely, it was one of the first organisations to also create a Youth Board to give young people a voice. Kids Count believes that young people should be involved in finding solutions.  Therefore as part of their organisational structure they have a Youth Board made up of young people drawn from all walks of life, many of whom have been recommended to Kids Count by the network of contacts and grass roots organisations that Kids Count work with to reach as many young people as possible.

All the people associated with Kids Count are volunteers. Linda Lawrence literally works seven days a week for Kids Count and has used her own family finances to fund the day-to-day running of the organisation. One large corporation, similar in stature to your own, is Sony United Kingdom who has discreetly provided funding.

They have also support the Kids Count Inspiration Awards programme, and the first awards ceremony which was recently held at the House of Commons.  I myself provide Linda with funded office facilities within my business at Tring but most of all I want to give something back and this is a worthy cause which is not just about saving lives here and now but ultimately the future and I will do anything I can to protect and encourage our children away from crime.

Are you satisfied with the level of personal security that your staff have to endure everyday getting to and from work? Could you make their travel safer for them to get to and from work? Are you happy that you as an organisation are giving something back to the community that provides you with staff that continually contribute to your organisation/company? This is where we would like your help. We are currently setting up Regional Boards run by young people within your area. These Boards will contribute to reducing crime rates within your community (being part of and coming from your community) and therefore they will play an active part in securing and protecting what is essentially theirs.

It is acknowledged that Kids Count punches way above its weight, but is in need of additional funding. Its desired independent status unfortunately precludes it from access to much of the financial support normally available to charities.

I have attached a more detailed outline of Kids Count's ethos and structure, which hopefully gives you a better appreciation of this organisation and the very worthwhile difference it is trying to make to the future of young people. The Kids Count website address is www.KidsCount.org.uk
